LYNN’S LAW FOR PUBLIC HANDICAP RESTROOM STALLS

Public handicap restroom stalls are currently not friendly to people who have feeding tubes, ostomies, need to catheterize to urinate, or anyone else that carries medical equipment on their person. An effective way to solve this under appreciated issue is to:

  • Place a hook beside the toilet and above seated level to hang a backpack containing a feeding tube and pump or any other medical equipment. The hook behind the stall door is too far from the toilet.
  • Place a shelf at seated level by the toilet to place medical supplies.
  • A sink is a necessity in all handicap stalls, as many medical conditions require a sterile technique or can be very messy.
  • There should be a Red Sharps Container to safely dispose of used syringes and medical waste in all public restrooms.
  • Place a handicap sign on all handicap stall doors to get people to think before using the handicap stall. Too often the one handicap restroom is occupied by someone who can use any of the other stalls. Unfortunately, many people with gastrointestinal disease who must use a handicap stall have difficulty waiting for a stall without consequences.

Currently, patients with these issues are not able to use a public restroom without someone else coming into the stall to assist them. However, even with the extra person helping, it is often difficult without the hook, shelf and sink. In addition, there is a loss of privacy and personal dignity for a person to have to be accompanied into the stall of a public restroom.
